Vivien is currently completing a Masters of Arts and Cultural Management at the University of Melbourne. She has also previously completed a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Screen and Cultural Studies at the university. In this degree she studied film theory, with a focus on the relationship between film and gender theory. Her interests are primarily in film and cinema studies, particularly in the areas of film distribution and exhibition, and how these fields affect audience engagement. She is particularly interested in exploring how audience’s experiences are affected by changing formats of film exhibition and consumption. Vivien has been involved as a volunteer at several film festivals and cultural events in Melbourne such as, the Czech and Slovak Film Festival, MonsterFest, and the Japanese Film Festival.
Berlin is another popular destination for international students, having the highest numbers of international students of the cities looked at so far and of any other city in Germany.
Tourism in Berlin was interesting because the top five countries of origin for tourists coming to the city were entirely European apart from the United States. Most tourists arrived from the UK, suggesting that they would most likely have a strong familiarity with Alice in Wonderland.
The city has a large number museums, the subject of most of these museums are the history of Berlin and the examining the relationship between Berlin and art. The importance of Berlin's museum culture is exemplified by the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Museum Island. Deutsche Kinemathek stands out as an ideal location to host Wonderland because of its detailed focus on film. The museum looks at the history of German film through its permanent collection but also hosts temporary exhibitions.
Paris appears to be similar to London in its popularity as a destination for tourists and international students. It also has a considerable amount of museums and cultural institutions and I found that when searching for data most of Paris' tourist literature focused on showcased these attractions.
Similarly to London, there was a lot of engagement on TripAdvisor with the city of Paris. The museum I selected as the most suitable for the Wonderland exhibition, La Cinémathèque Française, did not have the same levels of online presence as the V&A in London. This institution was the most relevant to the Wonderland, however, as it has hosted similar exhibitions previously. The small online following and attendance figures may have an effect on the visibility of Wonderland in Paris, if La Cinémathèque Française was to host the exhibition.
London has been the largest city I have looked at so far in terms of tourism and attractions. It has the most amount of museums by a large margin. However, the popularity and engagement with the museum that Wonderland will be exhibited at is also very high, which would play a key factor in raising the profile of the exhibition. The museum has a large following on all social media platforms and is very active in its content production.
London is the city with the largest numbers of tourism and tourist engagement with a considerable amount of reviews and comments posted on TripAdvisor for London. The strength of its international attraction is also seen in the number of international students studying in the city. Although the number of tourists coming to London is lower than Los Angeles, there is far more engagement online from tourists and attractions listed on both TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet.
